Artist's statement

"My work is made from earthenware clay and is generally slab built and decorated with underglaze colours and oxides. I have dedicated my time to working as a potter since 1988 and I have continued experimenting and learning from these techniques of production.
I have always viewed my 'pots' as a canvas on which to tell stories and make wry reflections on life, the family and community. I use clay because of its 3-dimensional qualities, its plasticity, and the pleasure I find in watching the different stages of clay production: from wet to leatherhard, to dry, and then the magic of the gas kiln, whereby colours may change and the clay becomes vitrified into its permanent form.
My work tends to follow themes through searching for some sort of resolution to things that preoccupy me - families, the natural world, farming practices and the state of the spirit. I work from home and spend a lot of time thinking and watching, writing and drawing. My work may be found in many important private and public collections in Australia and overseas. My life as a potter is my passion. It has led to many opportunities and is both fulfilling and demanding. The routine and cycles of clay suit me and I cannot imagine finding this satisfaction with any other career." Mary-Lou Hogarth, 2008.
